Blog:’Action plan’

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

In response to the two reports, the BBC issued a statement saying that “these historical breaches were tackled by a comprehensive action plan launched by the BBC in July 2007″.
“This included a major programme of training for over 19,000 staff, a new specialist unit to provide advice on all technical aspects of running competitions and a strict new code of conduct.
The BBC One show’s production team rigged an online poll in 2006, in which the winning entry – Cookie – was disregarded in favour of the name Socks.
The watchdog has now ruled this was another “serious” deception, “especially given that the programme is primarily aimed at children”.
However, there was no financial penalty attached to the ruling.

Blog: PM ‘did not press Libya over IRA’

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Gordon Brown declined to put formal pressure on Libya to get compensation for IRA victims, No 10 has confirmed.
The victims say Libya should pay compensation because it supplied the IRA with explosives used in atrocities.
Mr Brown told a victims’ lawyer it was not “appropriate” to discuss the claims, but aides have denied he was trying to protect oil deals with Libya.
Democratic Unionist MP Jeffrey Donaldson said the PM had done far less for victims than US leaders had.

Blog: Malays charged over cow protest

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Six Malaysian Muslims have been charged with sedition for parading the severed head of a cow through the streets of Shah Alam in Selangor state last month.
The men were protesting against the building of a Hindu temple near a mosque in the area.
Some of the demonstrators stamped and spat on the cow’s head.
The case has stoked tensions between Malaysia’s Muslim majority and the Indian, mainly Hindu, minority to whom cows are considered sacred.

Blog: Taking responsibility

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Indonesia’s civilian authorities also bear institutional responsibility.
The report says they also continued to fund militias despite knowing about the gross human rights violations they were committing.
Pro-independence groups also committed violations, it says, though far fewer and less serious in nature.
Some of this has been said before – part of the commission’s task was to analyse previous data – but this is a bilateral body, commissioned not by the UN, but by the two governments themselves.
Indonesia has traditionally said the violence in 1999 was sporadic – the result of the actions of a few individuals.
The question now is whether an admission of responsibility be enough for every Timorese – and whether it be too much for some in Indonesia

blog:Gap, Inc. Needs More Than a White T-shirt

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Even though North American sales of Gap clothing have gone up slightly in the past few months, the company has a long way to go in order to recoup from its 13% decrease in sales last year. While the company has been trying to reinvigorate its clothing line, adding White T-Shirts to the mix will probably not be enough to significantly improve the company’s bottom line.
While the Gap’s other ventures Old Navy and Banana Republic have been steady, the Gap label has been in trouble for quite some time now. What used to be considered young and trendy, the clothing is now anything but. Not knowing who their core consumers are may be the problem. Even though White T-Shirts are a fashion staple for any wardrobe, people normally don’t need more than one. As younger shoppers have moved on the stores like Abercrombie and Fitch, Gap struggles to return to its younger fashion roots.

blog:Marketing director

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Marketing director Breege O’Donoghue described the scene best by saying, “We’re managing the situation on all three doors. As two come out, two can go in, as three leave, three can come in. We thought we’d be busy but nobody ever could have anticipated this. It’s just crazy. They can get exactly the same stuff in any of our stores…”

The new Primark store is 70,000 square feet, which would normally be adequate enough for normal store traffic, and packed with people trying on clothing in the aisles and discarding merchandise they didn’t like on the floor. Others were going through the discard piles looking for T-Shirts and other items that might have fit them. All in all, it was a very busy shopping day

blog:Blears Speaks Out about Sweatshop Controversy

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Hazel Blears, who is running for a Labour Party deputy leadership role, had decided to sell T-Shirts and other items on her web site as a way to help others show support and spread the word. Now there is speculation about whether the shirts were manufactured in sweatshops in Bangladesh. The factory where some of the merchandise may have come from burned down in 2005. Many of the employees suffered injuries or died as a result.
“It has been brought to my attention that one of the T-Shirts available on my deputy leadership campaign website can be sourced up the supply chain to a company linked to a tragic disaster two years ago at the Spectrum Factory in Bangladesh. I am investigating this claim with some urgency. I am angry and upset at any suggestion that a company my campaign is using might be unethical in any way,” Blears said recently.
